Göschenen

Approximately 7.4 million tonnes of rock will be excavated for the construction of the second Gotthard bore. What challenges does the transportation of this rock present? A large portion of the material is reused – for instance, in the construction of the tunnel itself and the renovation of the first bore. The excavated material is categorized while still inside the tunnel and then brought to the surface. Subsequently, one part of the material is sent to the processing plant on the south side – via conveyor belts through the Gotthard railway tunnel – while the other part is transported by rail to Lake Uri for the renaturation of shallow water zones. The visit will focus on the current progress of the works inside the tunnel.
